How to Become an Airline Pilot ?

For many people, flying for the airlines as a pilot is the ultimate dream so if you’ve asked the question ‘How do I become an airline pilot?’ You will find answers here to start to your career to become an airline pilot …

Here we will only focus to become an airline pilot which will bring to you a career with a salary between 60.000USD – 150.000USD per year until almost age of 60 years.

The Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) is the highest level of aircraft pilot licence, required to command aircraft over 5700 kg or with over 9 passenger seats.

We will try to explain in a very simple way how to become an airline pilot (in other words having ATPL licence).

Now let’s start to understand how to become an airline pilot.

Everybody knows that a motor vehicle (car, bus, motorcycle etc.) have registration plates which indicates the registered city and country of motor vehicles

and so aeroplanes have registration marks which indicates the registered country of aeroplane

As you know to be able to drive a motor vehicle (car, bus, motorcycle etc.) you need have a valid driving licence

with proper motor vehicle rating on it and it shall be issued by the government division of registered country of motor vehicles. As similar to motor vehicles , to be able to fly as a pilot on an aeroplane, you need to have a valid pilot licence

with proper aeroplane type rating on it and it shall be issued by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of the registered country of aeroplane.

Most of the countries have a government statutory authority which is called Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) that oversees the approval and regulation of civil aviation (At the end of the day Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of your country will issue your pilot licence). If you need more detailed information you can visit your country’s Civil Aviation Authority CAA websites for licencing of pilot.

Your pilot licence issued by the country’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is valid only in that country. If you learn to fly in the USA, for instance, and want to come and work in the UK or Europe as a whole, you’ll need to convert your FAA licence into a European Licence. There is no a Pilot Licence that is valid worldwide. But if you get EASA approved pilot licence which is the most acknowledged worldwide (easy to convert and/or approved by other countries) it will give more chance to you to work as pilot worldwide.

Integrated commercial flight training (which is a full time course designed to take you from no flying experience to being able to join an airline as a First Officer – often referred to as Zero to Hero!). This Training will take between 14 to 18 months.

At a dedicated commercial flight school costs between approximately $80,000 USD to $110,000 USD. At the end of the course, you will have a ‘frozen’ ATPL (Air Transport Pilots Licence), which is the licence you need to go on and pilot a commercial aircraft.

At present, most airlines expect a low hour, inexperienced pilot to fund their own ‘type rating’ after finishing flight training. A type rating is a bolt on to your frozen ATPL, allowing you to pilot a specific commercial aircraft like a Boeing 737 or Airbus 320 (you can’t just jump from one type to another without extensive retraining). This generally consists of around 40 hours simulator time and 6 take offs and landings in the commercial aircraft you are being trained to operate. You should really budget for another $25,000 USD to pay for a type rating once you’ve finished your training. You might get lucky if you join an airline that will pay for it, but most don’t these days unfortunately.

The above figures are based on average flight training costs which exact amounts. Generally speaking it’s a bit cheaper in the USA, but then you need to acquire 1,500 total flight times before you can get a job as a First Officer with a commercial airline. In Europe you can potentially get a job straight out of flight school with 200 total flight hours.

The path to become an Airline Pilot simply consists of following steps;

  • Select the country to get a pilot licence.
  • Getting theoretical and practical trainings from CAA approved training schools.
  • Making required minimum flight hour experience from CAA approved training schools and by flying within any aeroplane operators.
  • Passing the written/verbal/practical tests at CAA department and/or at CAA approved test centres.
  • Getting your issued pilot licence (ATPL) from CAA.
  • Getting your type rating training from CAA approved training schools

Prior to starting training for any pilot licence it is worth considering the medical standards required. You will need to have a medical examination and be given a medical certificate in order for your licence to be valid.

On the road to a career as an airline pilot, there’s no ‘routine’ route to be followed. , there are many different career paths; training routes and financing options which you may choose. You’re going to have to make many decisions.

There's no "right way" to become an airline pilot. You can train through a local flight school, university program, airline cadet program, or even the military. There are a lot of options out there, so do your research to see what works best for your goal.

It's no secret that flight training is expensive. But it's not impossible to figure out a way to fund it. Loans are available at many flight schools and universities for training.

Applicants for an ATPL licence must be at least 21 years old. But keep in your mind that most major airlines prefer pilots with a four-year college degree.
